Goodbye December!

Just when I thought that I would be blogging more after the end of my torturous examinations, ironically, I've not blogged since my exam ended. Without realising, it has been more than 2 weeks since the end of my first semester. It is finally the last day of 2011. December has always been my favourite month (despite having a torturing first half of December this year) as it is a month filled with various celebrations. The joyous atmosphere and chilling winter (big fan of cold weather) are definitely something to look forward to. I would not hesitate to say that it is definitely one of the best years in my life, despite some ups and downs. Life has been so colourful this year with different adventures and new discoveries. I thought I should be doing a review of 2011 but I guess I have too many pending posts to complete before that. From my recent London trip to Christmas and Boxing Day, there are simply too many stuff to share. I hope that I will able to post all the details before the new semester begins. Perhaps I shall make this as one of the new year resolutions to ensure that things will be done as scheduled.

Finally, I hope my readers (if any) have had an awesome 2011 and tonight, we shall welcome the arrival of year 2012. Thank you very much to 2011 for being such a good buddy of mine. I hope 2012 will be another year with promising experiences and wonderful adventures. Till then, Happy New Year's Eve!

Merry Christmas

I am back from London! It's definitely one precious experience. Being at a place that I've seen on pictures and TV so much since I was a kid. The surreal feeling left me pondering whether it is a fantasy or a reality but somehow, I managed to convince myself that it is for real! I'll definitely be blogging about that but meanwhile, I have to get all my information and pictures sorted before anything.

Uh oh, by the way:
 MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Overslept

The title says it all. I have overslept. It was supposed to be an innocent 2-hour nap. However, I woke up, realising that it was not 2 but 10 in the morning. I was left horrified. This always happens during exam. It always. There are so much to cover and so little time left, yet this left me with even lesser time.

It's officially 3 more days to exam. I hope the battle with time will not cause me scarred too badly. At this piont of time, my brain still feels empty, regardless of the amount of past year questions, chunks of notes and revision classes that I've stuffed myself with. If things still do not get rectified by tomorrow, I might be mentally scarred for the upcoming week (which might leave a permanent impact). Will my nocturnal side appear again tonight? I just need to fully utilise the remaining 60 hours.

Live Like We're Dying

Some songs just never get old and this is one of such example. Kris Allen has been one of my favourite singers since his post American Idol days. His humble and down-to-Earth image, together with his simple but effective music are the things which manage to catch my attention. In the era of electropop dance tunes and club bangers, it is good to have a peaceful mind therapy once in a while. His first debut hit single, Live Like We're Dying remains as one of my favourite song of all time, despite being released 2 years ago. It is such a motivating song with captivating lyrics, which appears just in time everytime when life is miserable and stressful. It reminds me of how we should treasure everyday and obviously, to appreciate every single day in life and make the most out of it.

I've to admit that I'm not an easily motivated person. However, this song has definitely got me hooked and has served its duty well in encouraging me to be a stronger person. Does it manage to motivate you, my dear readers (if any)? =)

Sleet

The weather has been quite cold recently. At the same time, it has been sleeting as well. Sleet is a mixture of rain and snow. It consists of generally transparent frozen or partially frozen raindrops. This happens especially at night, probably due to the lower temperature compared to daytime. As the examination is getting nearer and nearer, my emotion becomes as unpredictable as the weather. There are times when I feel so confident about my preparation, BUT there are also times when I feel so helpless and miserable with my progress. In 7 days' time, it will be the arrival of one of the most important examinations in my entire life, which will have a significant impact IF I do not perform as what is required.
Partially frozen raindrops on my window pane
On the positive side, I'll be able to explore this foreign land as I wish in 9 days' time. My brain is seriously loaded with information at this point of time. I feel that I need more time but at the same time, I wish time will be faster and the examination will be over in no time at all. The conflicting thoughts are definitely bothering me. My brain is like a fully pumped balloon, waiting for its time to burst.
Homecooked Red Bean Soup
Meanwhile, I've attempted to prepare my Homecooked Red Bean Soup for supper. It's not too bad for a first-timer, seriously. Cold weather and a bowl of smoking hot Homecooked Red Bean Soup make a perfect combination, much like how Bonnie is to Clyde.

Potato Head's out and back to books.

Happy Birthday to Me

Cravings are always hard to resist. Considering it is my birthday today, I decided to break the routine and have something special for dinner. Being an avid fan, I used to savour Japanese cuisine at least once a week. Hence, being able to resist the temptation for 3 months (ever since I've been here) is definitely a great challenge. I placed my online order for pickup at Yo! Sushi and surprisingly, the price is really reasonable. One thing I love about UK is the efficiency of their online purchase system. It's extremely easy to use and user friendly. What I like the most about Yo! Sushi is the ease of being able to request for additional wasabi for free of charge, with just a single click.
Whitworth Street
To ensure the meal is within my budget, I decided to collect the order personally from Manchester Picadilly Station. It's one of those rainy days in Manchester but I'm fortunate enough to be armed with my trusted umbrella. Going out for a walk is definitely a bliss, especially after a whole day of being a nerd at home.
Mixed Box & Salmon Sashimi
Upon reaching, my food was all ready for collection. I walked home eagerly with thought of sashimis and sushis all over my mind. As they say, the first bite is always the tastiest. Undoubtedly, it's validity is proved to be accurate in this case as well. I was on seventh heaven. The succulent salmon sashimi left me craving for more. In addition to that, the accompanying salad is extremely appetizing to with a touch of lemon. Sometimes, the constant pressure in our daily routine makes us realise how simple things in life can actually be so satisfying and fulfilling. Despite the being in the midst of a tough journey for the upcoming examination, I'm a happy boy today.

Happy Birthday to Myself.

32 Hours

This is quite a special year for me as it marks the first time I'm celebrating my birthday abroad. What makes it more special is that I'll be having 32 hours of birthday instead of 24 hours. Since 4 p.m. onwards, I've been receiving birthday wishes on Facebook (due to the time difference), which I sort of considered as the beginning of my birthday. Meanwhile, I'll be having my birthday here all the way until 11.59 p.m. tomorrow night. Hence, that's how the figure of 32 hours is obtained, for you curious cats out there.
A random scene at Stretford Road
Life has been quite mundane as usual. It's basically a big routine everyday. Two days ago, my friends had a mini surprise birthday celebration for me. One of them specially prepared a unique dish, Rosemary Baked Chicken for the occassion. The moment I stepped into the kitchen, it was pitch black with nothing but a well-lit candle glowing on the dining table. I was so surprised and stunned for a second. It was definitely a really heart-warming moment that shall be in my memory for years to come.

At the same time, I've decided to logout from my Facebook account temporarily. I've given myself a quest, which is not logging in to Facebook for 10 hours. By the end of 10 hours, I'll login to see how many notifications will I be getting. The mission has begun an hour ago and it will be all the way until 2.30 a.m. at the midnight before I'm able to access to my Facebook account again. Meanwhile, I'll continue to indulge myself with piles of notes and textbooks.

The Little Things

Today was the 2nd last week of class. Attendance was very poor as it was the beginning of revision class. There were only 6 of us. I feel that our lecturer is not as strict today compared to other days, perhaps due to the small amount of people in the class today. The class was conducted in a more laid-back approach. At the end of the class, the lecturer had a short session with us to ease our stress and tension with the arrival of our "doomsday" in exactly 2 more week's. It was a session that exposed me to all sort of new knowledge that I've never thought of. There was this certain part that caught my attention.

According to him, most of the time, the Chinese students are able to score for the calculation part, but they don't provide sufficient answer for theory part (perhaps due to limitation in language). He added that this might not be the case for Malaysians like us. However, an examiner is able to differentiate the writing between a Chinese student (he is unsure whether it's just applicable to Mainland Chinese or all the Chinese) and a local student. To my surprise, he mentioned that my writing is the most Chinese among peers (they do have Chinese style of writing too, based on my beloved lecturer). I was stunned for a second. A lot of thoughts came into my mind. Is my English that poor? What have I done for the past 22 years? Was every single writing I've done (including my blog) a garbage? Although it was such a simple and innocent sounding statement, I could feel my hope was all crushed and broken. Apparently, that wasn't the end of his sentence. By writing, he actually meant handwriting instead of style of writing. It might be due to our art of caligraphy which in turn, affects the way we write our alphabets. Being a drama papa, my emotions took a turning of 360 degrees. I felt better. There isn't critical problem with my current level of English. It's just my handwriting.

On the way home, I reflected on what he mentioned. Being a non-Chinese educated kid, my "Chinese" inspired handwriting (round and neatly separated alphabets) couldn't have been due to my caligraphy skills since I've never embraced the graceful art in my entire life, so far. Perhaps it was due our education system that emphasises a lot on neat handwriting, compared to the British way of writing which is more cursive and italic. This can be seen in the elder generation in Malaysia who is purely English educated (a time when English education was purely English, during the post Independence Day). They share the similar style of handwriting with the British.

My conclusion is, the "Chinese" (or more specifically "Malaysian") inspired handwriting is not the matter of race or religion. Aside from individual's trait, it might be influenced by the education system of different countries. Of course, whatever my lecturer mentioned was just a matter of discussion and he emphasised that it was not a form of racism or an attempt of trying to be rude. It's good as it makes things clear and I sincerely accepted his viewpoint. Meanwhile, I do not think there's anything to be ashamed of as it shows our unique culture and self in its way. It is what made me as a person, much like the variance between British accent or French accent. Both accents might be different but each is unique on its own way. However, I will continue to do my best to adapt myself to the different culture, hoping that I'll be able to master the accent some day (in terms of handwriting, it is kind of impossible since I was brought up that way). =D

Reality Sucks

Time continues to tick at its usual speed without showing any mercy for procrastinators like me. Mentally, I'm still trapped in the month of August but little did I know that the month of November is coming to an end, in the twinkle of an eye. The rapid movement of time is starting to tickle my sentimental side and leave me pondering about what I've done in the past 331 days (but let's not get into that).

I'm extremely unprepared for the month of December, which is usually my favourite month of the year. To think of it, December has not really been quite generous to me since the beginning of my university life, in which I would be either preparing for my examination/assignment submission at this time of the year. However, December 2010 has left quite a memorable impact on me as it is the year where I get to enjoy the month of December without any unnecessary pressure and stress (minus work pressure, but at least I do not need stuff my brain with piles of notes and keywords). I was undergoing my internship programme in one of the most renowned firm. Despite the workloads, there was neither examination nor assignment submission pending in my to-do-list. It also marks my first time on my birthday and being away from my hometown.

Despite having a small celebration, it's always good to know that less is sometimes more. The simple joy of being around with my family members and having a simple dinner at one of the restaurants in the town is enough to bright up my mundane life. Even though that was nearly a year ago, however, it feels as if things had just happened yesterday. In less than a week, I'll be another year older. Being a sucker for birthday celebrations, I have to admit that I've always looked forward to my birthday and I'm not embarassed to admit that I view birthday really highly and do not mind being cheesy once a year. However, whether it's due to my rapid aging or horrible schedule, I do not feel the anticipation at all this year. I'm living in denial and I just do not want December to come that fast. I'm really afraid of what I'm going to face. If only there are 31 days in the month of November, I will be another day away from the month of December. If only.

P.S. One thing that I should be grateful is if the world ever ends in end of 2012, at least I get to celebrate my birthday again next year before the hoo haa.. =)

Early Birds

My sleeping time is normally distorted from Thursday to Sunday as there is no class on these days. With winter fast approaching, my days can be extremely unproductive when I wake up at 12.00 p.m. and the sky turns dark as early as 3.30 p.m. Hence, we planned to go for dimsum today. I have always craved for the feeling of being at a dimsum restaurant, sipping my Chinese tea and stuffing myself with juicy, mouth-watering dimsum until my well-developed tummy becomes totally bloated. This craving is especially evident now as being in a foreign country always leaves me yearning for the familiar feeling (I used to have) from time to time.

In my opinion, Pacific Restaurant, located in the heart of Manchester Chinatown is totally the best Chinese restaurant that offers the best Chinese dishes (more specifically Cantonese dishes) in the entire city. The food there reminds me so much of the usual food we had back in Malaysia, perhaps due to its Hong Kong origin, a country which has quite similar style of cooking with Malaysia's Chinese restaurants.

I really enjoy going out on a Saturday morning, resting my brain and prohibiting myself to think any exam-related stuff. It lets me know how Manchester has so much to offer, with serenading view of the sunny morning (which is full of hope and joy). I hope I'll be able to do this in the coming weekends (perhaps after my examination is over). Meanwhile, it's time to go back to my piles of notes and books. Cheers!

Foot Rescue

Ever since I came here, my heels have been cracking like nobody's business. Now, my soft tender skin is totally dry, just like how smoked bacon is. Meanwhile, my feet are in dire state, especially the badly cracked heels.
First Aid for Feet
Realising the need of taking some serious action before the condition worsen, I got myself  the Peppermint Intensive Foot Rescue from The Body Shop as a remedy to the situation. I have started to massage my feet with the moisture surge yesterday. I'm extremely curious to see whether there will be any improvement with my  awfully cracked heels in weeks to come.

Meanwhile, I'm such a lazy person when it comes to applying all the fancy lotions and moisturiser. Having spent all my life in a tropical country previously, I'm a dummy when it comes to skincare. The only beauty product that I'm exposed is none other than my trusted Clean & Clear Facial Wash. Hence, with winter coming in no time at all, I need to be more disciplined and consistent in the application of all the confusing products for the sake of my skin.

P.S. At the same time, my fingers are beginning to crack as well. Time to get all my moisturising product in action.

P.P.S. This is not a paid advertisement by The Body Shop. =P

Time

After more than a year of life without examination, little did I know that it is slowly creeping into my life again. In 3 weeks' time, I'm going to face one of the most examinations in my life. It is always at moment like this that time is ticking at the speed of light.

It doesn't help either when the sky turns dark as early as 4.00 p.m. daily with end of autumn approaching. Feeling like a nocturnal creature, I always attempt to wake up as early as possible to recharge myself with the daytime energy but my effort hasn't made any impact so far. I do not know how I'm going to fare for this upcoming examination. At the same time, I do not have any gut to even think about it. It's my first examination again after more than a year and it's a qualification that I cannot afford to lose.

With this approaching in 3 weeks' time, I seriously have to force myself to procrastinate less. Time and tide wait for no man and I do not see any reason they will wait for me this time either. I just have to put in more effort. I just have to.

Insomnia

I was feeling extremely sleepy just now but I was forcing myself to complete the tutorial questions. Just when I've decided to go into my dreamland, my biological clock is trying to mess with my patience. I do not know why I'm unable to sleep now at this hour. I'll be having 6 hours of lecture tomorrow, starting all the way from 9.30 a.m. in the morning and I simply need to have sufficient rest to last me the entire day. Judging from the situation now, I just do not know whether I'm even able to wake up for the lecture tomorrow. Insomnia is such an inconsiderate bitch and it's really pissing me off. Let's not remind me that there is going to be a test tomorrow and with my weak mental condition, I have no clue on how am I going to remember all the necessary information tomorrow.

Winter Shopping

As winter is approaching sooner than we can imagine, I thought it's wise to start shopping for my winter jackets to avoid myself being frozen solid. Hence, I went to Trafford Centre (for the first time) yesterday after doing some serious research about the varieties it offers there. The journey yesterday marked the first time I travelled beyond the 7 km radius that I've been travelling around for the past 2 months.
The journey from Hulme to Trafford Centre took about 20 minutes at the rate of £2.80 per ride (with bus X50 or 250). Contrary to what we had back home, the public transport here is extremely punctual and the frequency of the available buses is just too good to be true.
The outside view of Old Trafford
Trafford Centre is located in Greater Manchester away from the Manchester City Centre which we always visit. As the name suggests, Trafford Centre is located a stone's throw away from every Manchester United fan's dream, the Old Trafford.
Trafford Centre is an extremely huge place to shop with awesome varieties to choose from. It offers most of the brands that you can think of - everything under one roof. It's definitely much bigger than Arndale which is situated in the City Centre. The architecture of Trafford Centre reminds me of the blend of Sunway Pyramid, Mid Valley and Genting's First World Plaza - all combined into one. The reason why I have to simply include First World Plaza is because it sports a merry-go-round (Victoria Carousel), a casino and even the fake blue sky ceiling, exactly like what you can see there.
2 winter jackets, 2 pair of pants and 1 foot rescue cream (to rescue my badly cracked heels)
Having done my proper research, I did not face any difficulty in choosing pieces of garments that I want from my favourite brands. It was more like a pick, try and pay session rather than the normal random shopping session. As a result, I managed to achieve high time-efficiency and grab a lot of good hauls as well. The amount of discounts offered are just simply irresistible.
I spent around 6 hours in Trafford Centre from having zero preparation to being fully armored for the upcoming winter. I need to take some time after my final examination in December to really spend a good day in Trafford Centre to explore the place further. At least I know where to go when I'm bored after this. =)

The Yawn Factor

I'm supposed to be studying now but I miraculously ended up typing this entry. I was writing 2 entries before this entry but decided to turn them into draft as I lost my inspiration halfway. The best word to describe my current state of mind is "rusty". I do not know the exact reason but I feel that my brain is not functioning as it used to be, perhaps after working for nearly a year (and not to worry anything about examination). I'm required to face the 1st half of one of the most important examinations in my life in 5 weeks' time. I've been trying really hard to change my habit of procrastinating. I think I've made a slight improvement compared (like how I've been catching up with the syllabus and listening attentively in class) to how I used to be previously but I feel that I still need to make a drastic change to strive for better achievements. I have no idea why I'm so easily distracted by every single thing, especially my laptop. Surfing the net from day to night never seem to be a boring routine but facing the tonnes of books is causing my eyelids to be really heavy. Exam is in freaking 5 weeks' time and I need to pass my 2 papers with flying colours. I just have to. There is really no time for me to waste.

My Love

Globalisation has been part of our lives for quite some time and as the world becomes one, so do the products that we consumers enjoy. Being overseas and still able to enjoy familiar brands is one of the greatest joy ever. One such brand that I'm totally infatuated with is none other than Starbucks. Back in Malaysia, I used to be a frequent patron of Starbucks, enjoying my sip of Signature Hot Chocolate and the wide array of Frappuccinos without fail at least once a week. Aside from the range of drinks offered, the best thing about Starbucks is the comfortable and soothing environment. With all the hustle and bustle of daily life, this is the exact relaxation which I'm always craving for.
Being two months without my favourite beverage is indeed dreadful. Hence, I decided to step into my favourite outlet once again yesterday. Sadly, I didn't manage to spend my time there due to time constraint. However, the cold weather did not stop me from having the chilly Mocha Frappuccino while walking all the way home. I'm proud to say that I'm in love again. It's exactly the same feeling like how it used to be and I'm a happy boy again.

By the way, Happy Halloween peeps!

P.S. It will be even better if Green Tea Frappucinno is available here but oh well, I guess I shouldn't be too demanding. =D

Of Not-So-Stressful Life and Constant Pressure

As our first examination is drawing near, naturally, the stress level increases. Let's not talk about my miserable study progress here as it is not the main point I would like to highlight. Upon witnessing the breakdown of one of my friends, I begin to ponder some serious issue in my mind. Of course, the critical issue here is whether we should actively instill a constant stress level in our mind (by actively reminding ourselves every single second that we are here with a mission and we MUST ensure that the mission will be accomplished by hook or by crook) or should take a more relaxed approach in completing the mission (by progressing with the right pace and keeping ourselves on track with the syllabus from time to time). Personally, I feel that I'm more of the latter (despite not being exactly the same - but then again, let's not dig into that matter deeply). It is undeniable that constant pressure will serve as motivation to push us further, that is, IF the optimum amount of pressure is applied. Naturally, this will lead to another doubt - what exactly is the right amount off pressure to be considered? To be honest, such a subjective and debatable question might garner different responses from different individuals. Rather than spending time just to find a solution for a ridiculous chicken-and-egg question, I feel that it is better to take a more relaxed approach in handling the issue (maybe a little too relaxed in my case). With too much constant pressure, we might end up feeling helpless. We might reach a point where we feel so useless that we will never ever be able to solve the problem.

Meanwhile, for the rest of us who prefer a more relaxed approach, we need to know what we should achieve at the end of the day. However, there is no need to constantly apply the unnecessary amount of pressure. It is best not to think about the irrelevant bunch of "what ifs" (e.g "What if I'm unable to solve the problem?", "What if things doesn't achieve the result that I wish for?" and yaddah 3x). In the first place, who are we to predict the outcome of things that have not happened yet. We are just an ordinary human being living in this extraordinary universe. One thing for sure, given the right resources/environment and with sufficient amount of effort invested, we will be able to maximise our chances of achieving things that we have been keeping our fingers crossed for since what it seems like forever. As for the rest of the things, let's just say that we will see what fate has stored for us.

Hence, to everyone who is sitting for any kind of examination, all the best and may we succeed in whatever we hope to achieve.

Halloween Extravaganza

I'm back from my first Halloween Party. It's one of the events organized by the Malaysian Students' Society of Manchester, which gathers most of the Asian (or Malaysian) around the city. Despite the lack of people in my contact lists, I was feeling extremely excited for the party as it is my first Halloween celebration and I had prepared a set of costume for the party. This is also my first time wearing a fancy (or maybe not so) costume as well. After having a mind boggling shopping session, my final choice for this year's look is a set of cowboy costume. Amazingly, I'm in love with the look even until now, especially the red bandana. It looks so cool when fully equipped with my ala Wild Wild West gun. To think about it, I realise that I've never worn a bandana previously in my entire life, whats moreover for a party like this.

Nevertheless, I wish I could have expanded my social network here, and know more people around. It will definitely be merrier and louder when partying in a big group. Until then, I've to start to be less strict and show more of my friendly side. I'm drop dead tired now but I'm feeling extremely positive as I've gained so much experience in just one night.

Too Little, Too Late

In the process of churning out happier entries, I can't help but to feel a little emotional, which explains the existence of this particular entry. The abundance of decisions in life tend to make me wonder how many right ones have I made. There is this particular decision which I've regretted so much even up till today. I've always wondered how my life would be if I had chosen another path. The current path has proved to be disastrous (maybe the word is a little too dramatic) but whatever it is, I keep telling myself that perhaps I will be happier (and more successful) if only I've opted for the road not taken. I do not know what else I can do now to correct the entire situation, but given a chance, I'll definitely attempt everything I can to make things right. If only the phrase "if only" is not just a mere fantasy, there might not be so much disappointments and regrets in life afterall.

Silence Is Golden

Have you ever feel not like talking? It just randomly struck me today. From the moment I woke up, I didn't feel like talking at all. Well, perhaps this might sound a little like pre-menstrual syndrome but maybe I'm too mentally exhausted to talk. There are so many things bothering my mind one after another and it's really crucial for me to clear them up before it's too late. Meanwhile, Monday is going to be over in a few hours' time which means that there are 2 more days to go before weekend is here again. Cheers peep!

Random Rantings

Every once in a while, I'll have the strong urge to blog. I want to have a trail of what I've done in life to allow me to reminisce the past in the future. However, at the same time, my laziness has discouraged me to do so. It might be just me but as we grow up, time tends to fly swiftly, refusing to wait for anyone. As days passed, without realising, I've been in this foreign land for nearly 2 months. On the attempt of trying to recapture what I've done for the past few weeks, I realise how mundane my life has been. It's been so monotonous both academically and non-academically that I know something has to be done before things get horrid. Hence, while I'm trying to improve myself academically (which is another tough agenda, but let's not get me started on that), I know that I've to explore and set on a journey while I'm still here. Chances are, we might only be here for another 9 more months and it will be tough to set our feet here again, at least in the near future. There are so many places which I wish to venture and there are so many things that I wish to see. I do not want to lock myself in my tiny little room for another 9 months to come, being absolutely clueless about the outside world.

The Journey of Potato

The beginning of the month of October marks the beginning of this blog for me. I'm being bitten by the blogging bug again. Blogging is no longer a stranger to me as I'd previously blogged. This time, it's the motivation that is going to determine how long am I going to blog again before my passion turns into a major boredom (which I hope will not happen ultimately). Of course, I would like to make this last for the longest time ever as it serves as my diary at least, to reminisce my humble journey in the future. Living in this world is an awesome adventure and it's essential to experience the most out of everything. Let the journey begins.
